Moby: improved engine efficiency

UPDATED RO-RO VESSEL PROPULSION THROUGH COLLABORATION WITH KONGSBERG MARITIME

A partnership that has lasted for over 50 years that between the
Moby Company
and the Norwegian technology company Kongsberg Maritime, which originated in the 1970s when Moby itself began its shipping business by purchasing several vessels from Scandinavia. A leader in the marine industry, Kongsberg is involved in navigation systems, dynamic vessel positioning, and, of course, thrusters. The synergy between Kongsberg and Moby was renewed again this year during the just-concluded engine modernization of five ferries.

Reduced Co2 emissions and increased efficiency

The modernization of the fleet demonstrates Moby Shipping Company’s desire to reduce the environmental impact and improve the reliability, which, moreover, has never been in question, of its ferries. Thanks to Kongsberg upgrade, Moby ferries will pollute less, decreasing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 30 thousand tons per year and will ensure better performance while also improving the quality of navigation for passengers.

The five “Ro-Ro” Ferries upgraded in Swedish shipyards.

So-called “Ro-Ro” vessels are ships referred to as Roll On and Roll Off, i.e., vessels capable of loading wheeled and wheeled container transport equipment on board, without the use of cranes and hoists.

Moby Vinci, Moby Aki, Moby Wonder, Moby Tommy, and Sharden. are five ferries covering all Western Mediterranean routes including the two major Italian islands Sardinia and Sicily. These vessels have received several propulsion system upgrades from the Kongsberg Hydrodynamic Research Centre, Sweden.

  • Sharden and Moby Aki will benefit from the new Kongsberg-made Promas Lite propulsion system, which has the feature of combining rudder and propeller into a single propulsion unit.
  • Upgrading the thrusters Moby Wonder and Moby Tommy , on the other hand, consists of new propeller blades with optimized hydrodynamic profile

Kongsberg Maritime synonymous with reliability

Kongsberg Maritime propulsion systems are among the best in the world, considered synonymous with reliability and high performance throughout the maritime shipping industry, and are found on the entire Moby Shipping Company fleet
