P12 the Flying Ferry from the Swedish company Candela

THE SWEDISH COMPANY SPECIALIZING IN MARINE TECHNOLOGY, PRESENTED THE FERRY – SHUTTLE CANDELA P12: CAN IT REALLY REVOLUTIONIZE THE WORLD OF MARINE TRANSPORTATION AND BEYOND?

The video that has gone viral, circulating on Tik Toc shows a kind of flying ferry, gliding over the water without touching the surface of the sea. Suspended in the air at a height of five feet, this model of Swedish technology is capable of drawing agile trajectories, demonstrating seemingly uncommon maneuverability.

If the premises shown in the video are borne out in the facts, the Candela P12 could really bring improvements and change the marine transportation industry, and even urban transportation where cities are washed by a navigable (or perhaps it would be better to write flyable) waterway. In fact, the P12 was designed as a cab flying over water rather than an actual ferry.

How does it fly over the water? Thanks to the Hydroali!

The unique design and technology of this hydrofoil, thanks to hydroplanes, allow the Candela P12 to rise above the surface when the required speed is reached. This can reduce the friction of water on the hull by 80%, allowing the P12 to drastically reduce fuel consumption.

Experimented in Stockholm

The Candela company is experimenting with the small P12 and the larger version P12 Shuttle in the German city of Stockholm, which, by virtue of its conformation on 14 islands, is particularly affected by the problems associated with traveling on water. Candela P12 turned out to be the ideal means of getting around among the waterways connecting Stockholm’s islands, being able to be considered an excellent alternative to ferries and, in this case, even cars.

How many people can the P12 Candela?

The Swedish companyCandela made this flying ferry in three versions: the P12 Business, the P12 Voyager, and the P12 Shuttle version.

The Candela P12 Business is approved to carry a maximum of 6 people, the P12 Voyager can carry 12, and the larger Shuttle version is designed for 30 passengers plus space for strollers and bicycles.

Top speed of 30 knots and lots of autonomy thanks to electric motors

The Candela P12 is fast, very maneuverable and consumes little fuel. Electric motors with 340 kw of power, manage to propel this flying ferry to over 30 knots of speed while consuming 5 times less than its disel competitors. P12 is also significantly cheaper in terms of maintenance costs and, of course, extremely more environmentally sustainable.

The P12 Will it replace the ferries traditional ones?

The Candela P12 is an extremely interesting experiment that shows the potential of a vehicle smaller than a regular ferry. Its big sister, called the Shuttle, being capable of carrying 30 people, could fulfill the function of collective transportation in a medium-sized city like Stockholm. Sailing, by the way, in almost always still waters. It is harder to imagine a Candela P12 Shuttle being able to sustain the average routes where ferries or fast ships are usually employed. Certainly, electrically powered motors are becoming increasingly common on modern-design ferries, and it is likely that hydroal technology could also return to more frequent adoption.
