Safe sailing: Ferry to Ischia withstands rogue wave

TWO TRUCKS OVERTURNED BUT NO INJURIES

The bad weather in March caused damage throughout the peninsula, with very rough seas in particular causing a number of disruptions to navigation. Particularly in the Bay of Naples, conditions were adverse to navigation such that many routes were slowed down.

Medmar ferry resists rogue wave

On March 7, a ‘tidal wave of enormous magnitude hit the ferry Benito Buono of the
Medmar
which was carrying some heavy equipment. According to a report in Il Messaggero, the rogue wave allegedly tilted the ferry to the point where the fastening cables of two trucks broke and tipped over in the hold.

Truckloads of bricks ended up on some cars, parked in the hold, destroying them. Fortunately, there was no other damage and especially no injuries. The rogue wave did not prevent the Benito Buono, which was traveling on the Pozzuoli-Ischia route, from reaching the port of Casamicciola.

Security Guaranteed

These are very rare events, which, fortunately in the totality of cases are endured by the latest generation of ferries, capable of navigating even in the most adverse conditions. These events, negative as they are, testify to the soundness of these kinds of vessels, which remain, for all intents and purposes, the safest means of transportation as far as sea crossings are concerned.
